ABOUT PHYSICAL PLANNING DEPARTMENT

The Metro Physical Planning Department is responsible for ensuring the sustainable development of human settlements within the Metropolis.
The vision of the Department is to become a unique technically capable and proactive entity, able to contribute effectively to the national development of sustainable human settlement in the Metropolis.


The functions and operations of the Department are governed by the following statutes;
  • 1. Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925)
  • 2. Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) with Amendment (Act 940)
  • 3. National Development Planning Commission Act, 1994 (Act 479)
  • 4. National Development Planning System Act, 1994 (Act 480)
  • 5. Local Government (Department of District Assemblies) (Commencement Instrument, 2009) ( L.I. 1961)
  • 6. Local Government Service Act, 2003 (Act 656)
  • 7. Environmental Protection Act, 490
  • 8. National Building Regulations, 1996 (L.I. 1630)

  • MAJOR ACIVITIES

    1. 1. Co-ordinate activities and projects of departments and other agencies including NGOs to comply with planning standards.
    2. 2. Assist in preparation of Physical Plans as a guide for the formulation of development policies, decisions and design projects in the district.
    3. 3. Assist to identify problems concerning the development of the Assembly (land, social, environmental and economic)
    4. 4. Facilitate and participate in research into planning the Assembly.
    5. 5. Advise on setting out approved plans for future development of land.
    6. 6. Undertake street naming, numbering of houses and related issues
    7. 7. Assist to offer professional advice to aggrieved persons on appeals and petitions on decisions made on their building.
    8. 8. Advise on the acquisition of landed property in the public interest
    9. 9. Preparation of spatial and land use plans
    10. 10. Monitoring settlement growth and controlling development to ensure that human settlements function as healthy places for residence, work, and recreation.
    11. 11. Facilitating the processing of development and building permits
    12. 12. Provision of general land use planning and urban development advice
