The Sekondi–Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has disbursed various livelihood-enhancing items and financial support to sixty (60) Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) at a brief ceremony held at the Assembly forecourt.
Items presented included deep freezers, electric fufu-pounding machines, poly tanks, roofing sheets, industrial sewing machines,
barbering tools, washing machines, bakery and pastry equipment, welding tools, and direct financial assistance.
Presenting the items, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo (Esq.), stated that the gesture forms part of
government’s vision to empower PWDs to live and work independently, thereby improving the lives of their dependents.
He noted that the beneficiaries were carefully selected by the Disability Fund Management Committee, which reviewed and approved the applications based on merit.
The MCE appealed to the recipients to make good use of the items and support received, emphasizing that future disbursements would be extended to
others until all eligible persons receive livelihood assistance. He expressed concern that some past beneficiaries had sold their items, leaving
them dependent once again.
“This support is meant to be sustainable. If well managed, it can create jobs and generate income. I urge you to use the items responsibly so you can benefit from their long-term proceeds,” he added.
For her part, the Metro Social Welfare and Community Development Officer, Madam Constance Baiden, disclosed that the total
support provided amounted to GH¢265,137.39, covering items and financial assistance for medical, business, and educational needs.
She explained that the presentation does not mark the end of the process, as a monitoring team has been put in place to
ensure that all beneficiaries utilize their equipment appropriately and do not divert the intended purposes.
Madam Baiden also noted that extensive consultation goes into selecting the items, with beneficiaries participating in the decision-making to ensure they receive the exact support they need.
She reiterated the call for beneficiaries to use the items responsibly to enable them to live independent and sustainable lives through the assistance provided.
