The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has held an engagement meeting with owners of temporary structures
and buildings marked for removal or demolition to pave the way for the reconstruction of the Takoradi–Cape Coast Highway.
The meeting brought together over five hundred affected residents and structure owners from the Sofokrom, Mpintsin, Kojokrom,
Ketan, Butumagyabu, and Fijai communities. The engagement formed part of the Assembly’s efforts to ensure effective communication
and peaceful implementation of the road reconstruction project.
Addressing the gathering, the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. Frederick Faustinus Faidoo, explained that the Assembly received official
notification from the Ghana Highways Authority regarding the planned reconstruction of the highway. He emphasized that the project was
of national importance and aimed to improve road safety, ease traffic congestion, and boost economic activity along the corridor.
Hon. Faidoo assured the affected residents of the Assembly’s readiness to support them in relocating to properly acquired and approved
new locations. He indicated that STMA would work closely with relevant departments to guide affected persons through the relocation
process to minimize disruptions to their livelihoods.
To reduce the immediate impact on residents, the Mayor disclosed that he had requested the contractor to commence work from the Sofokrom stretch, noting that the area has fewer structures along the right-of-way. According to Hon. Faidoo, this approach would allow additional time for residents in the other communities to remove their structures and make the necessary relocation arrangements.
During the interaction session, residents raised concerns about the short notice given for the removal of their structures. Many of the affected owners appealed to the Assembly and the Ghana Highways Authority for an extension of the deadline, requesting that the removal date be shifted from 13th December 2025 to the end of January 2026 to enable them to adequately prepare and relocate.
The Mayor acknowledged the concerns raised and assured participants that their requests would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities for consideration. He reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to continued engagement and dialogue with stakeholders to ensure that the reconstruction exercise is carried out smoothly and humanely.
The Takoradi–Cape Coast Highway reconstruction is expected to significantly improve transportation along the Western Region corridor, enhance safety for road users, and support socio-economic development in the affected communities.
