STMA ENGAGES TRANSPORT OPERATORS OVER UNAUTHORIZED PARKING ON AXIM ROAD.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has held a meeting with transport operators along the Axim Road in Takoradi to address the persistent unauthorized parking of private and commercial vehicles on the newly reconstructed road.

The engagement followed a report by the contractor who undertook the reconstruction works, as well as a subsequent inspection carried out by the Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Hon. F. F. Faidoo, together with a team of officers from the Assembly on Monday, 15th December 2025.

Addressing the transport operators, the Mayor cautioned that the continuous parking of vehicles on the newly reconstructed road poses serious risks, including the reduction of the road’s lifespan and the likelihood of road traffic accidents. He stressed that the road was not designed to serve as a parking space and must be preserved to ensure its durability and safety for all road users.
Hon. Faidoo urged the leadership of the transport unions to instruct their members to immediately cease parking on the road. He reminded them that the Kokompe Terminal has been officially designated for minibuses to park and wait for their turn to load passengers.

He also reminded the leadership of GPRTU that, as owners of the stores along portions of the road, they are responsible for providing adequate parking spaces for their tenants and customers, and should not allow parking on the roadway. The Mayor further disclosed that the Assembly had earlier this year engaged stakeholders along the Axim Road corridor to address similar concerns, but the situation had persisted despite the engagements.

The Mayor further announced that the Assembly, in collaboration with relevant security and enforcement agencies, would commence a special enforcement exercise with immediate effect to clamp down on and arrest the owners of vehicles found parking unlawfully on the road. In response, representatives of the transport operators informed the Mayor that they had secured a parcel of land along the Axim Road to serve as a permanent parking space for their buses. They explained that preparatory works on the site were ongoing and expected to be completed by January 2026. On this basis, they appealed to the Assembly for additional time to enable them to complete the necessary works.

After deliberations, the Mayor and his team agreed to extend the deadline for commercial buses to completely stop parking on the road after the Christmas holidays to allow time for the preparation of the new parking site. However, he emphasized that minibuses must stop parking on the road with immediate effect and comply strictly with the directive to use the Kokokpe Terminal.

The STMA reiterated its commitment to enforcing traffic and sanitation by-laws to ensure safety, protect public infrastructure, and promote orderly transport operations within the Metropolis.
