STMA RECEIVES TRICYCLES AND REFUSE CONTAINERS TO BOOST WASTE MANAGEMENT

by STMA / March 25th, 2026 /

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has received 10 refuse containers and 10 tricycles as part of efforts to strengthen waste management and promote a cleaner, healthier city.

Receiving the items, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Frederick Faustinus Faidoo, Esq., disclosed that an initial batch of five refuse containers and five tricycles had already been delivered, with the remaining items expected in April.

He noted that waste management officers across the three sub-metropolitan district councils would undergo training on the proper use of the tricycles to ensure effective monitoring and maximum benefit.

According to Hon. Faidoo, the intervention comes at a critical time when the Assembly has been facing challenges in waste management. He expressed optimism that the new equipment would significantly improve refuse collection and contribute to making Sekondi-Takoradi a smart and clean city.

The Director of Waste Management at STMA, Mr. Edwin Bonsu, explained that the items were donated by the Assembly’s waste management partners – Zoomlion Ghana Limited to support sanitation efforts within the metropolis. He highlighted existing challenges, including inadequate refuse containers, tricycles, and other essential machinery, which have hindered efficient waste management.

Mr. Bonsu added that the new equipment would enhance the Assembly’s capacity to manage spill-over waste sites, clear long-standing refuse dumps, and provide containers to underserved communities, thereby improving sanitation across the metropolis. He further emphasized that the tricycles would strengthen street sweeping operations.

Mr. Bonsu also announced that a new landfill management company, Waste Landfills, would soon resume operations at the Assembly’s engineered landfill site. The company is expected to undertake remedial works, address indiscriminate dumping, and ensure proper waste management.

On the integration of technology in waste management, he stressed the importance of promoting the circular economy, focusing on reuse, recycling, and source separation. He noted that sustained public education would be key to ensuring households understand and support these initiatives.

He expressed confidence that the new equipment would enhance the department’s ability to deliver efficient and sustainable waste management services across the metropolis.
